What is the best coffee maker with burr grinder on the market today? I’ve already selected some remarkable models considering the traditional drip coffee fans and those of you who like espresso-based drinks.
Although all models have a built-in burr grinder, they all provide different control over the final cup. I sort the drip coffee makers by their level of grind control. We are starting from the most advanced Breville Grind Control with rich grind settings but also the most expensive one. The middle model Capresso CoffeeTeam has fewer options, and finally Cuisinart Grind & Brew as the basic long-selling model with lower grind control and lower price tag.
Espresso machines in this review are different in their automation level and user skills required. I selected one best semi-automatic model for home baristas and one best super-automatic model for readers who are looking for a fast espresso cup.
Each model has a mini-review that begins with a brief one-paragraph description to save your time and skip on future reading. Here you will see the actual dimensions instead of inbox dimensions you may find in online shops. So, let’s get started!
DeLonghi Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine, ESAM3300
DeLonghi Magnifica is the most affordable super-automatic espresso machine with high customization of your final cup. This model offers the best options to price ratio in the super-automatic category and is very handy to operate.
The designers and engineers put a lot of features in a compact size. Everything is accessible from the front of the machine including a large 60 oz water tank. Measured as 14″ high, 16″ depth and 11″ width. You can put it under the cabinet, and 18″ from the counter will be enough to open and operate the bean hopper.
The double boiler system heats water fast and evenly, saving your time between cups and ensures the perfect temperature while brewing. Great performance and big water tank make ESAM3300 capable of serving in a small office. It easily can brew at least 20 cups a day.
The built-in burr grinder allows you to adjust the fineness of the coffee grind. But every super-automatic machine is not friendly to the oily beans, ESAM3300 is not an exception. So, a medium roast is recommended. You also can turn the grinder off and put your pre-ground coffee in a separate channel. I find this option useful when I want a cup of decaf coffee.
Although it’s a super-automatic one button grind and brew machine you can’t program it for a delayed brew at mornings. But it eliminates a lot of operations you need to do manually when you use semi-automatic or manual machines like a proper coffee ground tamping. Even more, you don’t need to go through the beginner barista learning curve.
Inside the box, you will find the machine, user manual, instructional DVD, warranty information, one water quality testing strip, and a bottle of descaler. All you need to start the show is coffee beans and water.
Breville Grind Control Drip Coffee Maker, BDC650BSS
This is the only grind-and-brew drip coffee maker that employs the current development in electronic and usability putting the competitors on the back shelf. It’s fully automatic, programmable, equipped with a relatively silent burr grinder and a water level sensor that will prevent you from messing up.
And it’s about time! This coffee maker senses the water level electronically and shows it on its LCD. When you select cups bigger than the level in the water tank, the LCD will ask you to “fill the tank” and the water tank symbol will flash. There’s also a beep signal when the water level becomes lower than the current brew size setting.
You can calibrate the grind amount, this is a unique feature for this model. If you have scales with 1 g or better precision you can ask the coffee maker for a test grind, then report the measured weight back to the coffee maker.
One more useful feature is switching this coffee maker from ounces to milliliters. Press and hold two middle knobs, “cup” and “strength” to set these parameters. I like using it in “single cup” mode because it allows adjustment to any mag size. Although it is a very nice feature it’s not listed in the current user manual.
This model has 6 levels of grinding fineness and they are easily accessible, see the knob on the top of the machine. There are also 8 strength levels which control the coffee amount used while brewing. Coupled with the grinder calibration feature that I mentioned above – this gives you great control over the final cup. You also can temporary disable the build-in grinder and put pre-ground coffee in the basket.
The capacity of the water tank is 12-Cup (60oz). It is accessible from the front of the coffee maker and has a flip-top lid for convenience. While there is no heating plate the thermal carafe is of decent quality and keeps the coffee hot long enough. This model also has no water charcoal filter.
It comes with reusable gold-tone filter, cleaning brush, carafe,
Breville the Barista Express Espresso Machine, BES870XL
A semi-automatic espresso machine that has better overall quality than any other at the price. It is equipped with a 15 bar pump, precise temperature control, conical burr grinder, and temperature adjustment that allows you up or down 4°F from factory set temperature in 2-degree increments. BES870XL outperforms more expensive espresso machines in many ways.
This coffee maker allows great control over the final result and is easily the best affordable machine, but you need to be familiar with the espresso extraction to operate it. If you want just an easy espresso without heading to the nearest coffee shop, I recommend concidering a super-automatic model like DeLonghi ESAM3300.
Even if you are new to these things, you still will be able to make a good shot because BES870XL comes with pressurized and non-pressurized versions of a single and double cup filters.
The version with the pressurized filter gives you a little more space for mistakes while adjusting grind settings and grind amount. At the same time, non-pressurized filters take you for a more challenging experience in making a good espresso.
BES870XL has been improved over its predecessor, the 860
The conical stainless steel grinder has 16 grind settings so you can fine-tune the grind size for the perfect shot. It grinds well enough for espresso.
The BES870XL Barista Express is 13¼ inches wide, 12½ inches deep and 15¾ inches tall.
Capresso CoffeeTeam 10-Cup Digital Drip Coffee Maker, 465 TS & 464 GS Models
This grind and brew drip coffee maker allows you to choose from glass and stainless-steel carafe. TS model comes with a thermal carafe and no heating plate, while the GS model has a glass carafe and will heat the coffee up to 2 hours after you’ve made it.
The burr grinder has five grind settings and is somewhat loud. By rotating the 6-ounce bean hopper, you can select from fine to coarse grind. You also can temporarily turn the grinder off if you want and put in your pre-ground coffee.
Adjust the coffee strength with the “Aroma” button by selecting one of three listed values. The grinder will grind less of more coffee for selected cups amount.
Yes, selecting a different cup amount is another way to change coffee strength. This machine allows it both ways because it will brew coffee until the water tank is empty. As for me, I found this approach pretty inconvenient and old-fashioned, especially because you can not detach this brewers water tank. I’m on for a mor pricey Breville BDC650BSS because it has great adjustability and electronic water control.
Capresso CoffeeTeam comes bundled with reusable gold-tone filter, can be programmed for a delayed brew and has a charcoal filter, I think it’s a nice option for tap water. It is 9½ inches wide, 10 inches deep and 15½ inches tall.
Cuisinart Grind & Brew Thermal 12-Cup Automatic Drip Coffee Maker, DGB-900BC
This is an automatic drip coffee maker with a built-in burr grinder, and it has been on the market for many years. It can be programmed for a delayed brew, comes with a thermal carafe, a good coffee filter, a water filter inside the tank, and a relatively loud grinder.
The manufacturers have kept this model for a long time meanwhile others were redesigned, discontinued and new replacement models were released. Recently they put DGB-900BC in the discontinued section on their website, but it’s still in stock, and you can still buy it.
Now DGB-900BC does not look as remarkable as before. But it’s still
The conical burr grinder is a little loud and has an 8 oz (ca. 302 g) bean hopper. It has no switch to adjust the grind fineness. But you can select between three coffee strength settings and ask the machine to brew more or fewer cups than you have water in the tank. It only changes coffee to water proportions. If you don’t need this option, you always can turn the grinder off and put pre-ground coffee in the basket.
The reusable gold-tone basket-style filter can save you some money on countless disposable paper filters. This coffee maker can brew up to 12 cups and alert the user with a “beep” sound when the coffee is done. Measured as: 8¼ inches wide, 10 inches deep and 15½ inches tall.
